Workshops

The current workshops being offered include but are not limited to the following:

NEW!
Creative Couching

This 2-day workshop will introduce you to the possibilities of using couching in your quilt-making. At first you will work in a small format, and then when you have gained some confidence in this technique, you will move on to designing and creating an original wall-hanging. Three options will be presented, but there is also scope to try something entirely new. Suitable for intermediate level quilters.

NEW!
Quilters at Play

This 2 or 3 day workshop, gives you an opportunity to celebrate quilters, as you create a small wall-hanging based on the designs presented in Ruth McDowell's book, "When Quilters Gather". You will choose from 5 available designs, perhaps featuring your favourite part of the process of quilting, or making a gift for a quilt-making friend.  Workshop fee applicable.

NEW!
The Gratitude Tree

This 2 or 3 day workshop will give you the opportunity to take some time to think about, and then celebrate in your quilting, all those things you are grateful for. After some guided reflection, you will piece a background and then applique a tree trunk and leaves symbolic of those things that matter most to you. The resulting wall-hanging will be deeply meaningful, and a personal treasure. Suitable for all skill levels.

African Collage

In this 2-day design workshop, you will be encouraged to play with African batiks and prints, fabrics and beads, borders and more, to create your own one-of-a-kind wallhanging. Come with your own artwork as a starting point, or purchase a class kit which will include all you need for the quilt top (each will be different), for $35. Suitable for intermediate level quilters.

Ferns, Flowers and Other Follies

In this 2 day workshop, you will be introduced to the amazing design motifs of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau periods. You will select several of those provided in designing your own unique wallhanging.  By the end of the one day class, you will be well on your way to finalizing your personal piece. In the 2-day workshop, participants will be introduced to various ways to embellish their wallhanging through beading, threadwork, angelina, and couching, as well as allowing for more time to complete the quilt top.

The Joys of Journalling (Expanded)

Enjoy two days of experimenting with new techniques for piecing and surface design, while creating small journal-sized quilts. This format is a terrific way to explore some non-traditional approaches to your work, and discover which are your favourites. Suitable for all skill levels.

One Classy Cabin

This old time favourite is given a new sophistication in this off-centre format of African fabrics juxtaposed with neutrals. Or create your version with dark scraps and light. Begin construction on either version of this eye-catching quilt in class. Finishing techniques will be discussed. This is a 2-day workshop.  Suitable for all skill levels.

African Sunshine

Paper-pieced points and curves pieced using the infallible 3-pin method simplify the construction of this traditional New York Beauty block. Set in the original design illustrated, they shine forth no matter what colours you use. This is a one-day workshop.  A class for skilled beginners.

Timeless Designs for Blocks and Borders

Border designs adapted from different cultures provide the perfect way to complement the blocks in your quilt or with which to build a border. The samples started in class will serve as a future reference for your own work. A one-day workshop.  Suitable for all skill levels.

It Takes a Village

Create your own delightful mountain village in African fabrics or scrap fabrics in this hands-on class, suitable for beginners or any students wanting to make their own version of this popular Kitambaa Designs pattern. Optional class kit is $35.

Log Cabins Unleashed

This one-day workshop is designed to push the boundaries a little, while working on that old favourite, the log cabin block. Participants will construct their own original log cabin starting with a favourite focus fabric or fabrics . Suitable for skilled beginners who are willing to take a few risks, spend time playing with their fabrics, and work intuitively.

Starry, Starry Night

Celebrate the magnificence of a starry night in this 2-day workshop, while you create this beautiful wall-quilt. The three sizes of stars are constructed using two different techniques, then pieced together into the whole. Suitable for skilled beginners (you are comfortable sewing a 1/4" seam allowance) and up.

Trunk Shows and Lectures

An African Adventure  - A showcase of quilts made with African fabrics, or inspired by Africa - vibrant and energetic and full of colour, like the continent from which they come. Through photos and stories, you will be introduced to many of the women from whom we import the African fabrics sold through Kitambaa Designs, and the widows' and grandmothers' projects we support in Uganda.

Travels with My Treadle  - This is the story of 12 amazing Ugandan women who make up the Bitengye Designers.  You will see many photos of this project, as you learn of Kitambaa Designs early involvement in teaching these widows and grandmothers sewing and quilting. The finished work of the Bitengye Designers will be for sale, with 100% of the proceeds going back to the women individually, and towards their ongoing training. A story full of hope and encouragement.

The Art of Art Deco  - This lecture and powerpoint presentation will introduce you to the art of the Art Deco period, in architecture, textile design, and poster art, among other things; and will suggest possibilities for incorporating the stylized over-the-moon motifs from this period in your work as quilters.  Examples of quilts made using these motifs will be on display.
